Whatsminer M31S+ water cooling plate upgrade tutorial

Compared to traditional air-cooling, upgrading the water-cooling system for Whatsminer M31S+ can more effectively transfer heat away from the heat-generating core and dissipate it, which helps miners maintain stable performance during high-load operation. The M31S+ 78Th water-cooled plate is only suitable for M31S+ miners with a hash rate of 78Th. The liquid cooling plate utilizes a water pump to drive the liquid circulation, removing the heat generated by the hash board. A good cold system helps reduce the risk of hardware damage due to overheating, thus extending the miner's service life.

Prepare the necessary Whatsminer M31S+ water-cooled kit before modifying the water-cooled system.

Detailed instructions for upgrading the water-cooling system of M31S+:

1. Disassemble the miner's protective shell, remove the fan, control board, and adapter board at the air inlet, unscrew the conductive copper busbar screws, remove the connecting cables, then take out the three hash boards.

2. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws fixing the front heat sink and remove it.

3. Use a circuit board cleaner to clean the thermal paste on the surface of the ASIC chip.

4. Apply thermal paste evenly to the surface of each chip on the hash board.

5. After completion, align the water-cold plate with the hash board and fix it with screws.

6. After installing the liquid cooling plates on all three hash boards, accurately place them back into the miner box.

7. Reinstall all the hardware that was removed earlier, don’t make mistakes when connecting the cables and conductive copper bars, then connect the fan speed simulator to the control board.

8. Next, install the external water cold circulation system. Install the base and water pump bracket on the radiator, and then mount the water pump on the bracket.

9. Prepare two 1-to-3 water distributors, cut the long water pipe into six short water pipes of the same length and two long water pipes of the same length.

10. Connect three short water pipes and one long pipe to each water distributor. Use hose clamps to secure the six short water pipes to the interfaces of the three liquid-cooling plates.

11. Connect one long water pipe of the water distributor to the water pump outlet and the upper flow divider, which is the inlet of the liquid cooled plate; connect the other water pipe to the radiator inlet and the lower flow divider, which is the outlet of the water-cooling plate.

12. Add coolant to the water pump. When adding coolant for the first time, the coolant level in the water pump should be about 5cm from the top of the pump.

13. Power on the miner and the liquid-cooling system. After starting the water-cold system, the coolant in the water pump flows into the liquid-cooled plate. During the first operation, the water level may drop. We need to continue adding coolant until the water level stops dropping.
