How to use a 1000V capacitor discharge pen?

There are some 450V capacitors in the ASIC miner power supply. They will have high voltage when working. If no protective measures are taken, we will be in danger of electric shock. The capacitor discharge pen can help us discharge the capacitor when we repair the PSU, such as Antminer APW12, APW9+, Whatsminer P222C, P21D, Iceriver BP-H-3640, etc., so that we can repair and replace electronic components more safely.

The process of discharging the capacitor discharge pen 1000V:

Take Whatsminer P21 power supply as the test object.

Prepare tools: multimeter, capacitor discharge pen 1000V, Whatsminer P21 power supply

We need to discharge the 450V capacitor. When the voltage reaches the safe value, we can start repairing.

1. Adjust the multimeter to the DC voltage 600V range.

2. Turn on the socket switch to power the P21 PSU. Use a multimeter to measure the capacitor voltage to be around 450V, indicating that the capacitor has been charged.

3. Turn off the power switch and use a discharge pen to discharge the capacitor. Clamp the discharge pen between the two ends of the capacitor. When the indicator light at the tail of the discharge pen is always on, it means that the capacitor is discharging.

4. The indicator light goes out, and the capacitor voltage is about 9V.

5. After that, continue to discharge for about 5 seconds, and the voltage of the capacitor will drop to about 2V, which is a safe voltage.

6. Test it with a multimeter again, and we can see that the voltage is about 2V at this time. At this safe voltage, we can start to repair the power supply.
