Massena, a New York town on the Canadian border, is considering suspending new cryptocurrency mining projects for 90 days. Mayor Steve O'Shaughnessy complained that the streets of Massena were full of mining equipment. Despite a population of about 12,000, Massena has been a major cryptocurrency center for many years due to its cheap hydroelectric power. The town has the world's largest cryptocurrency data center and is operated by the mining company CoinMint, which was approved to open an abandoned smelter in February 2018, bringing 150 jobs to the border town.
