New York State Senator Kevin Parker recently introduced Senate Bill S6584. The bill calls on the New York State Department of Energy to "conduct a study on the use of renewable energy to power cryptocurrency mining facilities." The bill states that cryptocurrency mining centers are an emerging industry in New York State due to the proof-of-work area. The energy demand of blockchains (such as Bitcoin) and the public's awareness of the network's carbon footprint have caused controversy. Last week, the lawmaker introduced supporting legislation requiring the suspension of cryptocurrency mining in the state until its environmental impact can be assessed. The bill is currently awaiting review by the Environmental Protection Committee, while the Energy and Telecommunications Commission reviews the S6584 bill.
